Rositsa Yaneva 2016 SPATIALLY EXPLICIT PERCEPTIONS OF SOCIAL DEMANDS FOR ECOSYSTEM SERVICES UNDER DIFFERENT SCENARIOS ecosystem services expert-based assessment social demand trade-offs mapping environmental sustainability Human activities could have both positive and negative contributions to the environmental sustainability in the context of complex social-ecological system. As such, the realization of a mining project embodies a significant ecological and social footprint on both the biodiversity abundance and the local communities. Facing the challenges delineated by the climate change and managing the impact of the modifying anthropogenic presence in the natural systems, qualitative assessment of the social demand for ecosystem services could be used to analyze tradeoffs within a watershed in the semi-arid conditions of Southwestern Arizona. Tradeoffs are also considered to give relevant results when unfolding the future trends and integrating possible scenarios for watershed management in landscape terms. By coupling the preferences of the ecosystem services beneficiaries (ESBs) with natural-based parameters, this research will help to identify the main ecosystem services reliant on water resources. As the social demands on the natural resources are believed to be affected by the natural peculiarities of a specific area, the landscape ecological concept and place-based analysis are prominent approaches in the research analysis. Consequently, mapping the perceived demand for ecosystem services under different water flow scenarios in the conditions of an environmental conflict will draw the attention to probable management interventions for nature protection and institutional regulations.
