Basculer SONATAS is a multidisciplinary research project aimed at grasping (i) how local communities and people perceive their landscapes and ecosystems in a context of rapid social and environmental changes; and (ii) how they think about adaptation to environmental changes through their immediate sound environments, or soundscapes. Our exploratory project will be located in the Pima County (Arizona – USA) which is confronted by multiple sociological and environmental changes including climate warming, water scarcity and uncontrolled urbanization. Moreover, it is locally facing an important mine project with potentially substantial environmental consequences. Sonatas aims to understand through sounds experiences and perceptions how the environment is locally conceived by local communities and whether it is seen as changing or immutable when confronted to important ecological disturbances such as the development of a new copper mine. Our objective is to explore how different types of ecological knowledge coexist within those local communities in the context of major change and how people could collaborate together to face those changes. The OHMI Pima County has been created in the area to specifically address the questions of the socio-ecological dynamics and will provide us with valuable and consistent data on the fieldsites, from both local scientists and informants networks. Our multi-disciplinary team is composed of researchers interested in these issues in various regions of the world, so that Sonatas will be developed into a more ambitious medium-term project through an application to a French ANR or an ERC grant in 2019.
